The winter 2012 issue of Scottsdale Living magazine includes a story called “Cosmetic Confidence”, which highlights the growing number of nonsurgical procedures and new demographic trends in cosmetic surgery including men, baby boomers and menopausal women.

In the article, Dr. Todd Malan discusses the increasing trend in his office of patients seeking Botox, fillers, laser procedures and fat transfers to the face over major surgical procedures. In addition, he describes how more men are looking into aesthetic procedures to help them appear younger, more vibrant and more able to compete in a tougher job market. And baby boomers, who are now in their 60′s, are showing their desire to fight the aging process rather than grow old gracefully.

Adult stem cells, which occur naturally in the body, are being used in a wide variety of medical and aesthetic procedures, both in the U.S. and abroad. Scientists say they could transform medicine, providing hope for millions of people suffering from:

  • Major physical trauma
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis and other neurological disorders
  • Severe burns
  • Birth defects and numerous other disorders and conditions that will eventually benefit from stem cells

Unlike the controversial embryonic stem cells, adult stem cells are harvested from the patient’s own body — often from fat tissue, where they occur in abundance. Several recent articles on adult stem cells show a growing global movement towards increased research and use of these potentially lifesaving cells:

For many women, the hand is the one area of the body that really gives away our age. While there have been anti-aging products on the market for decades, until recently there was no real solution for aging hands. Cosmetic procedures aimed at tightening skin or filling lines and wrinkles in the face really aren’t successful in treating the exposed veins, tendons and bones in our hands that become so prevalent, particularly for women, as we mature.

Recent advances in fat transfer procedures now enable us to turn back time and regain youthful-looking hands. The reason? We actually lose fat volume from our hands as we age, so replacing that lost volume is the optimal solution. The procedure itself is simple: a small amount of fat is harvested from the abdomen or hip and then injected into locally anesthetized hands. Patients report that all they feel during the fat transfer is a tugging sensation in their hands. And the results speak for themselves, as seen in the pictures below: (insert before/after hands photos)

This month, Dr. Malan is quoted in two great articles about natural breast augmentation.
This story in AlwaysNewYou.com discusses the benefits of fat transfer vs. implants. As Dr. Malan explains, fat transfer to the breast involves the gentle harvesting of fat tissue from unwanted areas of the body (including hips, thighs, stomach, back) via liposuction. Naturally occurring adult stem cells are then separated from a portion of the fat, activated and re-concentrated into the remaining fat. This stem cell-enhanced fat is then injected in micro-droplets into the breast. The stem cells then go to work, creating a new blood supply for the transferred fat — allowing it to survive and grow!
New You Magazine’s story features the latest developments in breast augmentation, and the increasing prevalence in fat transfers to the breast. In the article Dr. Malan describes one of the best aspects (for many women) of natural breast augmentation: “I tell my patients to go and gain three to five pounds. The weight goes right to the breast!”

Not many of us truly understand the significance of the ingredients on the back of our favorite moisturizer or mascara. If it’s approved for sale in a drugstore or department store, it must be safe, right? The truth is, the FDA does not require companies to test skin care products or cosmetics for safety. As it turns out, many of these products contain harmful chemicals — including carcinogens which are known to cause cancer. Ready to take a closer look at the products in your bathroom?
Here is a list of 10 harmful chemicals in cosmetics and personal care products, according to NaturalNews.com:
  • Synthetic coloring ingredients (listed as D&C or FD&C) — cause cancer in lab mice
  • Emulsifiers — Diethanolamine (DEA) and Triethanolamine (TEA) cause cancer in lab mice
  • Leads (found in many lipsticks)
  • PVP/VA Copolymer — found in hairspray, toxic when inhaled
  • Triclosan — can impair thyroid production, contributes to antibiotic-resistant bacteria
  • Urea — a preservative found in a wide range of products, can cause skin irritation, headaches, fatigue, depression
  • Phthalates — dangerous toxins that harm the nervous system
  • Formaldehyde — known to cause cancer, found in nail polish, hair gel and hair straightening products
  • Petroleum — many petroleum-derived products , including propylene glycol, are linked to serious health problems
How Do I Ensure My Skin Care Products Are Safe?
Look for 100% organic skin care lines that feature the USDA Organic seal. The Innovative Med Spa carries Eminence, an award-winning handmade organic skin care line from Hungary, which is free of harsh chemicals and additives. The Eminence Biodynamic Collection features plant-based ingredients that are farmed according to their optimal lunar phase in soil enhanced by natural medicinal herbs and mineral composts — no chemical fertilizers or pesticides. The result? The most potent organic skin care products available, prepared to calm the most sensitive skin, and revive skin that is showing the signs of aging or hormonal imbalance.

In the current issue of InWithSkin Magazine, Dr. Malan discusses the breakthrough in anti-aging procedures that may revolutionize the beauty industry. Adult stem cells, found in abundance in our fat tissue, are now being used to help replace volume in our faces that is lost as we age. And unlike facelifts or fillers that temporarily smooth lines and wrinkles, stem cells actually work to rejuvenate the skin — essentially turning back the clock to reveal younger skin.
A stem cell fat transfer to the face is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure performed with local anesthesia. A small amount of fat is gently harvested from typical fat storage areas of the body (like the abdomen or hips). A portion of stem cells within the fat are then separated, activated and re-concentrated into the remaining fat. This cell-enriched fat is then injected in micro-droplets into the face using a syringe. Typical downtime following this procedure is 24-48 hours. Over the next few months, the stem cells repair damaged and aging tissue, improve cell function and build stronger collagen fibers. The result? Refreshed, rejuvenated, younger skin — no scalpel required.

Scottsdale, Ariz. (August 17, 2011) – Dr. Todd K. Malan, founder of Innovative Cosmetic Surgery Center, has become Arizona’s first approved physician to offer his patients the option to bank their adult stem cells with Dallas-based BioLife Cell Bank. Banking stem cells saves valuable tissue that would otherwise be thrown away as medical waste and preserves its regenerative qualities for future medical or anti-aging treatments. In fact, Governor Rick Perry of Texas recently helped pass legislation in his state that authorized the creation of an adult stem cell bank just prior to his own stem cell procedure.

Over the past decade, research on adult stem cells has helped blaze the trail for a new field of science: regenerative medicine. Cosmetic surgeons and medical researchers alike have begun to recognize the potential for adult stem cells in a wide variety of treatments, including aesthetic and reconstructive procedures. At the Institute of Surgical Research at Brooke Army Medical Center, adult stem cells are being used to re-grow skin, in the hopes that burn victims will soon be able to use their own stem cells to heal.

As the first U.S. surgeon to perform a natural breast augmentation using a patient’s own fat tissue and stem cells, Dr. Malan has worked to educate his patients and peers on the significance of stem cells in both present and future cosmetic and medical procedures.

“In addition to their impact on the cosmetic surgery industry, adult stem cells have enormous lifesaving potential,” said Malan. “I inform all of my patients about the benefits and ease of banking stem cells when they come in for liposuction procedures.”

Malan continued, “As technology continues to advance, we will be able to use stem cells to treat a variety of serious medical conditions. We know that stem cells lose viability as we age, and certain diseases can dramatically impair their effectiveness. It’s important to bank stem cells when we’re still relatively young and healthy, so that they will be more effective down the road when we need them.”

BioLife is the only stem cell bank in the world that cryogenically preserves both fat tissue and the stem/regenerative cell matrix. The banking process takes place after a portion of the patient’s fat tissue, replete with naturally occurring adult stem cells, is harvested via liposuction and then carefully packaged and sent to BioLife.  BioLife uses liquid nitrogen to store the fat and stem cells in a preservation tank at its facility.

Advances in Liposuction

The days of long recoveries from liposuction with the accompanying scarring are long gone. With the new advancements in Liposuction, you can have the procedure on Friday and be back to work on Monday! When liposuction was in its infancy it wasn’t unusual for people to end up with lumpiness and scars that needed to be hidden out of embarrassment. Now with Advances in Liposuction like Vibro, Tickle, Laser, and Body-Jet liposuction creating contouring without pain is an option.

Liposuction remained largely unchanged for over twenty years. Large cannulas were used to tear the fat into tiny pieces and vacuum it out. And if that doesn’t sound violent, the resulting scarring, lumpiness, and long painful recovery would’ve shown that it was.

Laser liposuction involves making small incisions that can be easily hidden by clothing or in natural creases. Through the incision, the fat layer is filled with tumescent solution. And a small laser fiber about the size of a strand of spaghetti is threaded into the area. The laser boils the fat until it is a liquid that can be easily suctioned out of the area. This eliminates the need for a sharp cannula to tear at the area, which often resulted in blood loss and nerve damage. In addition, that heat generated by the laser tightens the skin preventing the sagging skin that often resulted from traditional liposuction.

Although laser liposuction was a step forward, it alone can leave skin prone to bunching, especially in the belly area. Whereas Body-Jet Liposuction uses powerful pulses of tumescent solution to break up the fat. The skin is smoothed out and reseals to the muscle, making it the preferred method for sculpting six-pack abs. Using the two methods together usually yields the most satisfying results. In addition, Vibro or Tickle Lipo in which the suction tip oscillates is emerging as a viable ways to achieve the fat removal so many people want. These advances in Liposuction allow your doctor be a true artist practicing in the medium of minimally invasive body sculpting.
