Adult stem cells, which occur naturally in the body, are being used in a wide variety of medical and aesthetic procedures, both in the U.S. and abroad. Scientists say they could transform medicine, providing hope for millions of people suffering from:

• Major physical trauma
• Cardiovascular disease
• Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis and other neurological disorders
• Severe burns
• Birth defects and numerous other disorders and conditions that will eventually benefit from stem cells

Unlike the controversial embryonic stem cells, adult stem cells are harvested from the patient’s own body — often from fat tissue, where they occur in abundance. Several recent articles on adult stem cells show a growing global movement towards increased research and use of these potentially lifesaving cells:

• A pioneer in the use of adult stem cells for regenerative aesthetics, Dr. Todd Malan is featured in the inaugural issue of Scottsdale Business + Life Magazine in a story on stem cell banking. (Pg. 16)
• An international conference hosted by the Vatican in early November was devoted to the medical application of adult stem cells, with the Vatican promoting research and use of the cells in medical procedures.
• Last month a clinical trial on stem cell therapy in heart failure reported promising results for patients experiencing moderate to severe heart failure.
• Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning recently received stem cell treatments in Europe following surgery to his neck.
• Texas Gov. Rick Perry received an injection of his own stem cells during spinal fusion surgery to treat a recurring spinal injury.
